2015 Year Ender

2015 is a year of many upheavals. Fairchild TV invites audiences to take a look back at the turmoil the world has experienced over the year. The rise of ISIS in the Middle East due to long-lasting civil wars in Syria and political chaos in Iraq caused a massive refugee crisis in Europe. The Paris attacks became a point of focus, prompting a number of countries to join together to combat ISIS. In addition, Europe’s issues with the influx of refugees and the Greece debt crisis have been global concerns.

In Canada, 2015 saw the Liberals taking over the Conservatives after an almost 10-year run as the leading party. A series of promises Trudeau made before the election are to be realized after he was voted into power. Among them, the decision to accept more Syrian refugees into Canada has been a popular topic of debate. Canada has also been facing many challenges including the drop in oil prices and the Canadian currency, plus a recession of energy exports. The economic benefits of the state treasury have decreased despite the increasing competition of exports, and the real estate prices in Vancouver and Toronto have continued to soar.

In Hong Kong, political confrontations have become more serious, even affecting the education sector as the controversy on the appointment of Hong Kong University’s Vice Chancellor gathered much attention from the general public. The Legislative Council has rejected political reform, and the success of many young elected members in this year’s District Council resulted in hot debates. In addition, the lead content in the water of public housing and the cancelation of 9th grade TSA were also of great concerns.

New to this year’s specials is Movie Review 2015 hosted by Delon and Leo of Saturday Sneak Preview. Throughout the year, many great films were released and box office records were broken. Does this year’s film industry reflect previous trends? Are we seeing a continuation of this trend or a year of special exceptions? Tune in to find out!

For the past 20 years, the Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant organized by Fairchild TV has created countless legends. For many young talented girls, the Pageant has been a starting point for their dazzling life journeys. It is a ‘Glamorous Transformation; A Beautiful Beginning’ indeed. This year’s 10 finalist are all ready to embark on a new chapter in life as they head towards the final competition on December 9th. Leading these girls on stage is guest MC Anne Heung, and coming all this way from Hong Kong to show support is special guest performer Alex.

With the Final just two days away, Alex and Anne made their first public appearance at a press conference. MC Mary Lo mentioned that Anne spent some years residing in Vancouver, and started on her acting career through overseas recruitment of Miss Hong Kong Pageant. Coincidentally, Anne passed on her crown as 2nd Runner up in the Miss Chinese International Pageant 1999 to the Miss Chinese International Pageant 2000 2nd Runner Up Crystal Pan, the delegate from Vancouver at that time. What a great connection between Anne and Vancouver! Despite the many years of experience after the Pageant, Anne still carries the beauty and grace of a Miss Hong Kong. Anne shared her own stories competing in pageants and was glad that she had previously had the chance to meet face to face with this year’s contestants.

Fairchild TV always prides itself as a charity event supporter. Earlier in the week, What’s On hosts Shirley Zhou and Emma Chen volunteered at the Union Gospel Mission’s annual Christmas Dinner where these two beautiful ladies handed out warm Christmas meals to residents at Vancouver downtown east side. Emma was in charge of bringing the delicious meals to the dining tables for guests to enjoy while Shirley was busy wrapping presents to spread the holiday spirit. As past Miss Chinese Vancouver contestants, Emma and Shirley have attended various charity events. This time however, the two were serving the community as program hosts, making the trip equally meaningful. Through volunteering at this event, the two wished to show others that even amidst the holiday celebrations, it is important to reach out and lend a helping hand to those in need.

11/26/2015

Under the chilling winter weather, the Miss Chinese Vancouver Contestants brought along some gifts and headed towards the SkyTrain station to show their love by volunteering with the Richmond Cares Foundation Christmas Fund event. They encouraged citizens to donate toys and books to help children from low-income families. Joining a group of RCMP, firemen, paramedics and community nurses, the girls stood by the donation boxes, calling for people to donate and handing out hot drinks and pastries. Although the weather was only around the freezing mark, the contestants’ positive energy and support warmed the heart of other volunteers and local residents.

Maggie expressed that enjoying the time on stage is the best way to show off an excellent performance and gave credits to her supporters who played an important factor in helping her overcome her nervousness. She encouraged the contestants to communicate more with friends and family. Once struggling to balance school and the Pageant, Maggie also pointed out that time management is very important and being well-prepared is half the battle. As the winner of the Outstanding Intelligent award, Sandra recently received a scholarship to enroll in medical school. Sandra understands that the most nerve-wracking part of the competition is definitely Q&A. To give an example, Sandra quizzed the 10 contestants with the same question that she received in the Pageant last year and suggested to each contestant on how to improve her answer. Last year, Sandra encountered an unfortunate slip-up during her hula-hoop dance talent performance. However, she managed to keep her composure and continue on performing, even excelling in the Q&A segment that followed. Sandra reminded the contestants to forget things that happened in the past and keep looking forward to the next performance with confidence. Maggie and Sandra’s tips provided the 10 contestants with a lot of encouragements and better prepared them for the December 9th competition.

Transit Plebiscite Forum

04/30/2015

The Metro Vancouver Transit Plebiscite Forum organized by SUCCESS was held in its Chinatown office with support from Fairchild Television and Talentvision. The great debate featuring representatives from the Yes and No sides drew hundreds of audience members. As media partner, Fairchild TV raised questions to both sides. The Yes side argued that raising the new taxes to improve public transit would reduce the chances of obesity thus improving health. They also claimed that such tax would be affordable and help create better business environment. Meanwhile the No side countered that Translink is so poor at financial management while taxpayers are already paying lots of taxes. They further stated that the lack of competition is causing poor efficiency in Translink, so the public transit operator must improve management and competitiveness before demanding more taxes from the public. During the forum, SUCCESS also appealed to the public to mail in their ballots before May 29.

Mimi Choo Concert

04/21/2015

Tickets to the two Mimi Choo in Concert shows organized by Fairchild TV were long sold out in early March. With much anticipation, Mimi finally arrived for her performance, taking Vancouver by storm with her talented vocals and humorous personality.

Mimi Choo Concert

With about 1000 fans eagerly awaiting, Mimi made her extravagant entrance onstage, powerfully delivering the lyrics of Ja Jambo, heating up the theatre’s atmosphere. Due to tight work schedules, Mimi had departed from Vancouver for two days to other Canadian cities after her arrival for a press conference earlier in the week. Mimi remarked that she dearly missed her fans in Vancouver, echoing the Chinese saying, “one day apart feels like three years”. Thus, she and the fans had already been apart for six years. Mimi then performed hit television series title songs Shanghai Beach and This Land is Mine, bringing the audience back to the Golden Age of television in the 80’s and 90’s. Changing the pace with the song Far Apart, Mimi stepped down from the stage to the audience, handing out souvenirs to passionate fans. The artiste absolutely loves to interact with her fans and invited a guest on stage to sing Brave Chinese People with her, with overwhelming laughter erupting throughout the theatre. Fairchild TV specially arranged for Super 10’s Benny Kwok and Lucky Luo to perform The Past is Like a Song and Flower’s Heart as a special gift for Mimi who was the guest performer and judge for their competition.

The highlight of the night was when Fairchild program host William Ho joined Mimi onstage for the performance of Xi Feng, acting out the roles as the Emperor and Li Feng in perfect harmony. Another fan volunteered to play the part of the store helper, taking the opportunity to general more laughter and jokes. Not only did the audience fall in love with Mimi’s wonderful vocal talent, but were also greatly entertained by her witty comments and humor. The concert was concluded by a group performance of Cheerful New Year with Mimi and all performers joining hands to wish the audience a prosperous year of 2015.

To this, Mimi joked that her concerts are always a big hit all around the world. Mimi promised her fans that the concert will be filled with amazing classics well as witty and funny elements, a full 120 minutes of entertainment guaranteed. MC of the concert William Ho was at the press conference and revealed that he will perform a hilarious duet with Mimi on stage. During the Q&A portion of the press conference, a reporter asked if Mimi would be adopting the same contents of her Hong Kong concert in the upcoming Vancouver concert. Mimi kept her lips sealed, only disclosing that this show is sure to be more cosy, ensuring that fans will be able to enjoy an up close and personal concert experience. Another reporter teased if Mimi’s character in the TVB drama Come On, Cousin resonates with her own personality. Mimi cleverly avoided the question with some humorous comments, asking the reporters questions in return, generating yet another round of laughter amongst the crowd.

Roundtable Meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper

01/12/2015

Ten local ethnic media outlets including Fairchild Television were invited to a roundtable during a recent visit to British Columbia by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, where topics including economy, gas prices, federal budget, Keystone pipeline project, and Canada-China relations were discussed. At our request, Prime Minister Harper expressed his immediate condemnation regarding the tragic terrorist attack in Paris against the Charlie Hebdo magazine office. Harper categorized this attack as a declaration of war against all nations in the western world including Canada and urged our nation to prepare for protecting ourselves and our allies. While being asked whether low gas prices would jeopardize the efforts to balance the upcoming budget, Harper says he is confident to do so as Canada is the most stable economy among the western world. He also assured that tax breaks such as spousal income-splitting will carry on as planned and will further explore the Canada-China free trade agreement with the Chinese government.
