Director Yuen Tak

2026-04-01

Renowned Hong Kong action director Yuen Tak, a member of the Yuen’s Seven Little Fortunes, reflected on his early training years, when his master provided food, accommodation, and martial arts instruction while disciples were expected to demonstrate lifelong loyalty and respect. Beginning training at 6 a.m. and continuing until 10 p.m. each day, the rigorous discipline laid the foundation for his nearly four-decade career in action choreography. Director Yuen shared that he never initially intended to become a director, but gradually stepped into the role through years of experience and continuous learning in action design.

In recent years, Director Yuen travelled to Sichuan to study the traditional art of Sichuan Opera face-changing. As the symbolic meanings of traditional masks can be challenging for overseas audiences to understand, he creatively incorporated familiar characters such as the Monkey King, Doraemon, Spider-Man, and pandas into his performances. Through this innovative approach, he aims to bring traditional Chinese performing arts to North America and foster greater appreciation for Sichuan Opera culture.
