【MCTP2019】Press Conference Welcomes Guest Performers James Zhou & Shuhei Nagasawa Back To Home Turf

11/26/2019

Organized by Fairchild Television, and co-organized by Talentvision, Fairchild Radio, and Popular Lifestyle & Entertainment Magazine, the Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant 2019 will be held on November 29th (Friday) at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre Hall G in downtown Toronto.

In its milestone 25th year, the Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant has grown to be the city’s largest beauty pageant. Fairchild Television has been working tirelessly to ensure that this annual event, watched by thousands across the country, will be memorable for all.

【MCTP2019】Press Conference Welcomes Guest Performers James Zhou & Shuhei Nagasawa Back To Home Turf

Through the Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant, Fairchild Television is committed to the principles of charitable causes and hopes to raise awareness and support within the Chinese-Canadian community for the services provided by local charitable organizations, while encouraging our finalists to become socially aware of what happens in their community.

This year, for the first time, the North York General Hospital has teamed up with the Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant in becoming this years' charitable partner. Part of the proceeds from the evening’s meal ticket will go towards improving the hospital. Many departments at the North York General Hospital are well-known, including the oncology department and their treatments for breast cancer, prostate cancer and rectal cancer. The waiting time for breast cancer treatment is shorter than the average wait time in Ontario. With over five-thousand babies born each year, it is no surprise that the maternity ward is labelled as one of the top three in Ontario. Hand in hand, the Child Intensive Care Unit is renowned as well. Mental health is another distinguished program at the North York General Hospital, especially for children and adolescents.

Kitty Tsang, Chief Financial Officer for the North York General, expressed her gratitude at the press conference: “The North York General Hospital is proud to be a charity partner for Fairchild Television’s Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant 2019. We were honoured to receive recognition from US Newsweek, placing us 2nd amongst 1000 other hospitals worldwide in their “World’s Best Hospital 2019” list. All the proceeds gathered from the Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant will go towards improving the North York General Hospital to ensure that we can continue to serve the community and become the best hospital in the eyes of the Chinese Canadian community in Toronto! We wish all the finalists the best as they take the stage Friday for the final show, and we wish great success to the Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant as they celebrate their 25th anniversary.”

【MCTP2019】Press Conference Welcomes Guest Performers James Zhou & Shuhei Nagasawa Back To Home Turf

This year’s special guest performers have a couple of things in common: both are singers, both have a long list of notable accomplishments overseas, but most importantly, both their dreams started in Toronto.

【MCTP2019】Press Conference Welcomes Guest Performers James Zhou & Shuhei Nagasawa Back To Home Turf

Born in Shanghai, James Zhou participated in many singing competitions before making a name for himself in the music industry. He won 2nd-place in Fairchild Television’s New Talent Singing Awards in 2010. The following year, he nabbed 1st-place in Fairchild Radio's The 4th Canadian Chinese Song-Writers Quest (SQ4). He often says that music and the stage are where he can find himself best. In 2015, he joined Sing My Song and wrote a touching song dedicated to his father, which moved the judges to tears and became a huge hit with fans. He then joined The Voice China and wowed the judges with his singing and dancing techniques, which ultimately landed him a place on Jay Chou's team.

After graduating from the University of Toronto, Zhou’s return to China proved to be a choice that would greatly help advance his career. In 2013, he became the music producer of the theatrical drama Mystery of Liao Zhai. In 2014, he performed his first TV series My Youth High Eight Degrees. The following year, he joined the second season of Sing My Song and made it to the Top 4 in Tanya Chau’s team. In 2016, Zhou launched its first EP album "I Am James Zhou". He is currently active in the music industry, writing music with icons like Lala Hsu, Yang Kun, Tia Ray and more, and continuing to advance his singing career.

2nd runner-up in the 2013 New Talent Singing Awards and winner of the "Most Popular Online" Award, multilingual-talent Shuhei Nagasawa never lost sight of the importance of music in his life. Since his return to China, he has signed with famous Japanese entertainment label Amuse, and has also participated in the Japanese production of “Romeo & Juliet” (produced in partner with Johnny & Associates).

He competed in the fourth season of The Voice China and landed a Top 4 spot in Na Ying's team (Top 16 in the country). After competing on The Voice China, Nagasawa hit a roadblock in his songwriting process. As he struggled with his next steps, he wrote down how he felt in the moment and turned it into a song. Shortly after, he released his first single "Crimson Love", which skyrocketed his presence in the music industry. Since then, his career in music has not slowed down. In 2016, he released two more singles “I Think” and “My Only Dream”, and his EP “Hide My Tears”. His journey is an inspiration to all, showing that perseverance to achieve your dream can get you through any bumps along the way.

Though both guest performers have a long list of notable accomplishments, both are ecstatic to return to familiar territory. As they prepare to take the Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant stage as guest performers, they can’t wait to return to their roots and the city where their dreams first came true.

MCTP2019 Contestant Journeys: #6 Joely Ho

Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant 2019 Photography Contest Highlights

11/09/2019

The Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant 2019 Photography Contest, organized by Fairchild Television and co-organized by Talentvision, Fairchild Radio, and Popular Lifestyle Entertainment Magazine, was held at 7:30pm on November 9th at First Markham Place.

Close to forty photographers participated in this year’s event. Spectators, alongside competing photographers, had the opportunity to not only witness the public debut of the nine finalists but also the finalists putting months of hard work to the test. For the past two months, finalists had been training hard at their choreography and catwalk sessions to ensure that spectators and photographers would capture their best possible side.

The first outfit consisted of autumn-esque outfits. The bold colours and symmetrical patterns screamed vigour and vitality. Following autumn comes winter; what better way to go through the chilliest season than with a warm coat? Finalists strut down the catwalk in elegant winter coats, proving one does not have to sacrifice style to be comfy. The nine finalists entered the latter part of the show with excitement as they donned elegant event gowns. Each finalist took the stage on her own to model and reveal her streamed-line pageant figure. The grand finale with this stylish and elegant evening gown wrapped up the night at First Markham Place in high spirits.

Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant 2019 Photography Contest Highlights

The response to the Photo Contest was overwhelming. All participating photographers were astounded as the nine amateur models posed for the lens. The catwalk music, the clicking sound of cameras, combined with pricey camera lenses, filled the whole venue and was music to everyone's ears.

A winning photographer will be selected to win a bottle of award-winning ice wine, sponsored by Willow Spring Winery. The result will be announced on our website on November 20th.

Viewers can get to know more about each of the nine finalists and stay up-to-date on their ventures (including all pageant activities such as photoshoots, promo shoots, catwalk training, choreography classes and visits to charity organization) by exploring www.TorontoChinesePageant.com or by following us on social media:

【MCTP2019】Giving Back To The Community - Mon Sheong

10/28/2019

Part of the pageant process is doing due diligence by emphasizing the importance of giving back to the community. On October 25th,our finalists paid a visit to the Mon Sheong Long-Term Care Facility in Richmond Hill and spent the afternoon with residents and staff.

The Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant is entering its milestone 25th year. To celebrate, residents and finalists teamed up to tackle an art project: design a sculpture that incorporates Mon Sheong and MCTP’s 25th anniversary. As the countdown timer reached zero, excitement and satisfaction could be heard from the teams of 2 as they completed their creations and prepared to show them off.

Finalists also serenaded long-term care residents with musical performances. From singing to the piano to flute, and a little dancing in-between, the golden oldie songs performed surely brought a blast from the past for the audience.

The joyous laughter that filled the room ensured that today's experience left a mark in the hearts of all.

【MCTP 2019】Giving Back To The Community - Daily Bread Food Bank

10/28/2019

Part of the pageant process is doing due diligence by emphasizing the importance of giving back to the community. On October 25th, our finalists paid a visit to the Daily Bread Food Bank and spent the morning giving back to the less fortunate.

Their tour of one of Canada’s largest food banks started with food sorting, where they had the opportunity to get hands-on and go through donations. Through teamwork, they made sure that all donations had not passed their 'best before' date and separated them into their corresponding categories.

The Daily Bread Food Bank is also a provider of hot meals for the less fortunate. The finalists had the opportunity to assist in potato-preparation in the kitchen. Their nimble peeling-skills and determination, as they pared through 15lbs of potatoes, garnered praise from both staff and volunteers present.

To be able to help those less fortunate than ourselves is an experience that surely would not be forgotten by all anytime soon.

On September 26th, from 7am to 6pm, DJ’s from Fairchild Radio will be broadcasting live from SickKids Hospital in downtown Toronto for this year's Fairchild SickKids Fundraising Day!

Great Mountain Ginseng is excited to help support SickKids Hospital!

SickKids Hospital has always placed the health of their patients as its top priority. Alongside providing world-class medical care, they also help develop techniques that medical professionals can use to improve the care provided.

We hope that everyone will join us in supporting the Fairchild SickKids Fundraising Day!

Donations can be made online through www.sickkidsfairchild.com or through the donation hotline 416-598-2303.

What goes on behind the doors at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is nothing short of miraculous: world-class medical staff doing ground-breaking medical research, and achieving extraordinary medical breakthroughs, all in hopes that they can save a kid’s life.

After six long decades, the SickKids building requires critical improvements so that doctors and patients can continue to provide (and receive) world-class care. Your contribution will ensure that Toronto’s SickKids Hospital will continue to be able to open their doors and continue to find advancements in medical techniques to help countless children have a happier and healthier future.

For this fundraising event, SickKids Hospital has made teddy bears to thank their supporters. There are six types, each of which represents a child with deep ties to the hospital. These teddy bears are SickKids’ way of thanking you for not only supporting the reconstruction of facilities but also for supporting these brave and strong children in their battles.

Supporting The Miniature Superheroes at SickKids

09/19/2019

In the eyes of many, children are the most vulnerable when they are sick. But in the eyes of the medical staff at SickKids Hospital, they are more than just patients; they are warriors and superheroes. Amongst them is Geoffrey, who powers through his illness with positivity and optimism.

Geoffrey is a child that is full of energy and mysticism. Though he has faced multiple examinations and treatments since his diagnosis, he has powered through those without falter. Support from his family and SickKids Hospital have both been essential to Geoffrey and his recovery. And, with your support, SickKids Hospital can continue to provide world-class care to more children like him.

6 specially-made teddy bears were made, each representing a joint belief and effort between SickKids Hospital and their patients to strive for a better future. Each bear also has encouraging words in Chinese to cheer on the children as they continue their battle at the hospital.

Children are gifts from above. Even though twins Charlotte and Ella faced multiple surgeries from birth, they were always the apple of their parents' eyes. Fortunately, SickKids Hospital has the equipment and expertise to fight hand-in-hand with children on their battle between life and death.

No one can predict the future, but Charlotte and Ella's extraordinary journey certainly kickstarted their road in life. The "Extraordinary" Bear is an omen to their journey. SickKids Hospital requires critical improvements to a building that has helped children for the past six decades. SickKids Brings Hope To The Next Generation - Overcoming Pain That No 6 Year-Old Should Ever Experience

09/11/2019

The saying goes "time heals all wounds"; but without the advancement in technology that helps treat children and counselling for their parents, Sean and his family would be in the hospital for way longer than needed.

The powerful medical team at SickKids Hospital can be said to be the backbone behind Sean and other sick children. This world-class children's hospital requires critical improvements so that doctors and patients can continue to provide the best care possible. For this fundraising event, SickKids Hospital had six bears made; each in the mirror of a child's battle at the hospital.

Sean's bear, affectionately named "Hope", is a promise for the future and hope those other children can win their battles with their illnesses.

These bears represent a joint belief and effort between SickKids Hospital and their patients to strive for a better future. Each bear also has encouraging words in Chinese to cheer on the children as they continue their battle at the hospital.

Students Can Sing 2019 Press Conference Welcomes 2nd Runner-Up of Season 3 of The Voice of China Ryan Yu

Guest performer Ryan Yu made the transpacific trip to take the Students Can Sing stage with our eight finalists as we find out who will emerge victorious and nab the Students Can Sing champion title.

Journey Through Music
Influenced by his grandfather, Ryan Yu’s love for music started at a very young age. His grandfather would play the piano and sing every day. In turn, music became a crucial part of Yu’s life. Born in Wuhan, this rising Chinese pop singer’s handsome and lively demeanour goes hand-in-hand with his singing skills.

During his time in the United States, he formed a band to continue his passion for music and singing. He entered a competition that he would later say helped solidify his decision to join the music industry.

When he returned to China, he jump-started his musical career by participating in many large-scale singing competitions. His achievements have been quite impressive, including a second-runner up position on the third season of The Voice of China.

In order to pursue his musical dream, Yu gave up the opportunity to study in the United States. When he expressed his desire to leave school to pursue music, he was met with strong opposition from his parents. However, he did not take his parents’ objections to heart. Yu went to a bar to sing and found a teacher to teach him proper techniques. His achievements today prove that his efforts have not been in vain.

Support Overseas
Yu is very popular in China. He participated in many large-scale singing competitions and achieved outstanding results.

In 2014, he participated in season 3 of The Voice of China. He emerged as the frontrunner in Yang Kun’s group and subsequently achieved a 2nd runner-up position overall. In the same year, Yu was named Wuhan’s N Generation Idol, as he inspires the younger generation to be innovative and courageous.

In 2015, he won the Newcomer Award at the China Music Awards. In the same year, he also became a professional racer.

In 2016, he sang the theme song for the outdoor reality show competition Our Challenge, and the ending song for the TV series City Still Believe In Love.

In 2017, he won the Oriental Billboard’s "Oriental Newcomer" award.

In 2018, he released his original single ‘Idol’ and his personal single ‘Wait For Your Answer’.

Not only has Yu won numerous awards in China, but he has also received strong support from his fans in Canada. In a recent ‘New Voice Award’ poll, he garnered the highest number of votes from his overseas fans.

Students Can Sing - Final 8

05/27/2019

Want to know more about our finalists? Check out their promo videos below!

"Students Can Sing" Contestant No.1 Jeffrey Chow
Jeffrey is a master at darts. Through competition experience, he believes that the most important thing (whether it be while one is singing or one is playing darts) is concentration. Through singing, one can tell a story and move listeners with music. He feels that it’s important to cherish the time he has with people who enjoy his music, rather than dwell in the past.

"Students Can Sing" Contestant No.2 Yang Yuqi
Yuqi’s hobbies include singing and playing basketball. He is very proud when he heard others praise him on the court and on the stage. Yuqi finds that music is a very important part of his life. Through music, he has been able to make new friends and learn about local Toronto culture.

"Students Can Sing" Contestant No.3 Teresa Tang
Music has always been part of Teresa's life, as she started learning the piano at a very young age. Through music, she has been able to meet many friends and learn about the many different cultural backgrounds in Toronto. She will put those experiences into her singing and hopes that she will have no regrets.

"Students Can Sing" Contestant No. 4 Sandy Sun
Sandy comes from a family of artists. Under the influence of her parents, Sandy started singing from a young age. She hopes that through her own performances and interpretation, she can express the meaning and mood of the song to the audience. Though she has been singing since she was a little girl, her parents have never seen her perform on the big stage. She hopes that this performance is one her parents will be proud of.

"Students Can Sing" Contestant No. 5 Andy Yuan
Music makes Andy more confident in life. He started playing the flute from a very young age. He understands that singing and playing the flute are different, as you need to be able to use your emotions to express the meaning of the song. His observant and cautious nature allows him to find out what is important and precious to him.

"Students Can Sing" Contestant No. 6 Yan Guanyu
Guanyu enjoys living life with spontaneity with a sprinkle of order.  He has an open and bubbly personality, much like the songs of his idols. Because of this, Guan Yu combines the way he lives life with his singing. He treasures every opportunity he gets to sing, as it is a way for him to improve his skill.

"Students Can Sing" Contestant No. 7 Cheng Haochuan
Haochuan understands that there may be no second chance in life, so he makes sure that he makes due when presented with an opportunity. Whether it be a competition or in his daily life, the most important thing is to have the ability to think and act independently. That way, you will be able to choose the path that you want to take. Haochuan integrates music into his life, and enjoy life while learning and sharing music.

"Students Can Sing" Contestant No. 8 Jessie Cai
Music is part of Jessie's life, as it has been doing for many years. She hopes to use her enthusiasm for music to perform on different stages and accumulate more performance experience. Jessie has met many friends because of singing, and singing has become a way for her to relax and decompress. She hopes to continue to adhere to this enthusiasm, sing her unique style, and embark on her own stage.

During his time in the United States, he formed a band to continue his passion for music and singing. He entered a competition that he would later say helped solidify his decision to join the music industry.

He expressed his excitement to once again return to Toronto this year for TVB Fairchild Fans Party. Hubert is known for his guest appearance in ‘Be Home For Dinner’ which jumpstarted his acting career. His most recent portrayal of a one-hundred-year-old spirit in ‘The Exorcist’s Meter’ has garnered high praise from fans. As singing is still his greatest interest, he brought two songs to his excited fans: the theme song to ‘The Exorcist’s Meter’, and the theme song for ‘Wife, Interrupted’.

With the highest audience recorded at 31 points, it’s no wonder that Sharon Chan was welcomed to the stage with excited applause from fans. As a new mother for just 2 years, Chan admits that "every job has different levels of challenges, but they all feel very fun". She hopes that, in the future, she can act in a wider variety of roles to help refine her skills as an actress. She brought two famous songs, ‘Star Dreams’ and ‘Think One Day’ to the remarkable show.

As a family man and an actor, he was very grateful to everyone for their support. He reminisced on how his time studying in Toronto 20 years ago were the best years of his life, and how excited he was to return to where he first started. Not only can she act, but she is also a phenomenal program host. She was awarded the ‘Best Program Host’ Award in 2018 with her show ‘Pretty Forty’. Many don't know that Tin is also a singer.
