Many major events occurred in 2019. Amongst them, the federal election took place in mid-October that changed the fate of the governing Federal Liberal Party, changing it from majority government to a minority government. Before the election, Huawei finance chief Meng Wanzhou was detained at Vancouver Airport late last year, and China arrested two Canadian citizens soon after, causing Canada-China relations to turn for the worse. Former Ambassador John McCallum was forced to resign after his comment on Meng’s case. Many Canadian agricultural products were suspended by China. In the SNC-Lavalin incident, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau violated the country’s ethics laws, when he urged his attorney general not to prosecute an engineering company in a conflict of interest case, according to a bombshell report by Canada’s ethics commissioner. This caused the Liberal Party to lose the majority position. The pipeline projects, that have plagued the western provinces for quite sometimes, have become the focus of divergence between the east and the west coast. There were even suggestions of separatism coming from the province of Alberta. By the end of the year, the Canada-US-Mexico trade agreement that finally came to a deal is another big event. As for Ontario and British Columbia, many important events occurred in 2019 that may have affected people's livelihood.

William Ho’s Participation in the documentary “Chinese Opera Diva – Hong Xiannu”

05/30/2019

As a culturally diverse city, Vancouver is always chosen by Chinese immigrants as a place to settle while providing an environment to nourish Chinese culture and arts. It has also given the opportunity for Cantonese opera to blossom overseas. A master of Cantonese opera, Hong Xiannu made Vancouver the first stop for her North American Tour in 1982. As a veteran opera singer for more than 70 years, she had a profound influence on the Cantonese opera field worldwide. Her unique singing style called “Hong Technique” is considered a cultural treasure in China. Last year, Hong Xiannu Art Center announced the idea of shooting a documentary called “Chinese Opera Diva – Hong Xiannu” to honor her contributions towards Chinese culture and arts. This documentary revolves around her miraculously rewarding life in the history of Cantonese opera and the rich legacy she left behind.

William Ho’s Participation in the documentary “Chinese Opera Diva – Hong Xiannu”

Recently, Leisure Talk grasped the opportunity to interview the documentary production team, who flew to Vancouver to capture footage of Hong Xiannu’s early life. Fairchild TV host William Ho is known to be a Cantonese opera enthusiast who has performed and mced at numerous shows. In light of his familiarity with the evolution of Cantonese opera in Vancouver, the production team also asked William his perspective on this art form. He expressed that in spite of the diminishing popularity of Cantonese opera amongst the younger generation, there are still a population of older Chinese citizens in Vancouver who value the importance of opera singing. When William first immigrated to Vancouver, he was blessed with an opportunity to watch a Hong Xiannu’s performance. Her dazzling stage presence and strong vocals motivated him to give Cantonese opera singing a try. William is thrilled and fortunate to be a part of the documentary as a way to pay a tribute to an opera legend.
