World Review 2022
Fairchild TV1 | Dec 27 (Tuesday) | 9:50pm

2022 was a restless year, with nonstop natural and human initiated disasters, and a number of major news events occurring. The most impactfulwas the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops, causing considerable upheaval in Europe. Tensions in Northeast Asia continue as North Korea keeps testing its missiles, posing a threat to the neighbouring regions. Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’sassassination shocked the world. Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning British monarch in history, died at the age of 96 and was mourned by millions of people. Even though the pandemic is not yet over, worldwide nations are easing the COVID measures and trying to coexist with the virus.

Finance Review 2022
Fairchild TV1 | Dec 28 (Wednesday) | 11pm

The Russia-Ukraine war triggered a global energy crisis and inflation, which not only led to energy shortages in Europe but global food crises. Countries all over the world raised their interest rates in response to the pressure of inflation, resulting in expected global economic recessions. The unreasonable rise in international prices caused Sri Lanka to declare bankruptcy, setting offpanics in the new emerging markets. With the U.S. Federal Reserve Board repeatedly raising interest rates, the global economic situation is trending towards recession. The bankruptcy of FTX, the world's second-largest cryptocurrency exchange, has seriously impacted investors’ confidence in cryptocurrencies, symbolizing the risk of a financial bubble burst.

China Review 2022
Fairchild TV1 | Dec 29 (Thursday) | 9:50pm

China's “dynamic zero-Covid” policy and strict quarantine measures toward COVID-19 have brought about public discontent and damagedthe country's economic development and foreign exports. With the China real estate market bursting into flames one after another, the wave of real estate closures has left a bunch of unfinished constructions. The massive layoffs of technology companies were followed by social anxiety and even affected China's political situation. As the 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party closed, a new generation of leaders emerged, and Xi Jinping officially began his third term. Confronted bythe mass protests against the pandemic measures, the authorities finally decided to lift some restrictions to rescue the economy and regain public confidence. How will the demise of the previous leader Jiang Zemin impact the Chinese political scene?

Canada put in great efforts to tackle several significant events in 2022. Among them, inflation and escalating consumer price index are the most concerning to Canadians. The central bank has increased interest rates to suppress inflation, resulting in irregular fluctuations in the housing market. The war between Russia and Ukraine also causes rising oil prices, adding more burdensto the nation's economy. In terms of COVID-19, the pandemic is stabilizing, and many restrictions have been lifted. Canadians can finally restore their pre-pandemic life. On the political side, the Federal Conservative Party has elected Pierre Poilievre as its new leader who is considered a strong contender against the Prime Minister. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and several ministers attended the parliamentary hearing on the activation of the Emergencies Act. Furthermore, on the matter of diplomatic affairs, the meeting between Justin Trudeau and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit did not go well, and the federal government later announced the Indo-Pacific strategy, which was said to be targeted towards China. In addition, several provinces have changed their governors this year, including Ontario and British Columbia. Vancouver welcomes its first Chinese mayor in the city's history. The National Premiers meeting demanded more in funding for health care services, and the federal government increased immigration quotas, all of which have far-reaching implications for Canadians.

0% cure. 100% courage. Telethon for Alzheimer’s month of giving raises over $202,000

12/08/2022

Besides raising awareness of dementia, the month of giving fundraising initiative organized by the Alzheimer Society of B.C. in November also gathered everyone in the Chinese community to participate in a series of fundraising activities and raised more than $202,000. Proceeds will help the Alzheimer Society of B.C. provide programs, education and support services to the community, as well as support dementia research.

Although there is no cure today, we can encourage community members to find different ways to care for the people affected by dementia, so that they have more courage to face the future. During the month-long fundraising initiative, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. connects with the Chinese community through different channels to bring the community closer than ever. The Alzheimer Society has again partnered with Fairchild Television to co-produce the 3rd annual Telethon for Alzheimer's TV fundraising program. In addition to providing a variety of information about dementia, there were interviews with doctors, dementia researchers and family caregivers, and more. Among the interviewees, Eric Li, a caregiver, shared his courageous story of caring for his mother, who is living with frontotemporal dementia. Watch his story here: alzbc.org/ericstory.

The Alzheimer Society also invited Dr. Roger Wong as a special guest to the radio and TV programs to share his experience communicating with people with dementia and their families and discuss the impact between the ageing population and dementia. The Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant 2022 charity gala dinner was the grand finale—a wonderful time to witness the birth of a new rising star, and at the same time, the Chinese Advisory Committee had the opportunity to announce the total fundraising amount.

"The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is delighted to be Fairchild Media Group's charity partner for this year's event. Your support and contribution towards helping to create awareness of dementia in the Chinese community is incredibly meaningful and has had a real impact," says Jen Lyle, CEO of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. She also thanked all the dedicated volunteers on the Chinese Advisory Committee for their hard work organizing various fundraising initiatives this month.

Year-end Interview with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

Year-end Interview with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau previously sat down with Fairchild TV News and Current Affairs department at a Chinese restaurant in Aberdeen Centre for a year-end interview covering international and livelihood issues. On the recent announcement of the federal government's Indo-Pacific strategy, Trudeau emphasized that the main objective is not to distance ourselves from China but explore new collaboration opportunities with other Indo-Pacific countries. Trudeau acknowledged that China remains Canada's second-largest trading partner. Through Chinese immigrants in Canada, the two countries have established a solid and close tie in terms of family bonding and ongoing business exchanges. However, he also pointed out that Canada’s interests will not always be aligned with China's perspectives. The sooner both parties recognise the differences, the more likely a mutually beneficial partnership will be identified. Trudeau saw opportunities to work with China in many areas, such as climate change and environmental protection. On the other hand, the meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit did not end well. Trudeau believed that diplomatic dialogue is always difficult, and it is necessary to build a constructive relationship based on the Canadian values. Trudeau also provided a detailed response on the questions of inflation, economic recession, the pros and cons of expanding immigration policies, the influence of foreign governments on national politics, health care funding, housing and carbon tax, and other critical issues Canadians are concerned about. Please stay tuned to this week's Magazine 26 for more.

Lend a helping hand to the victims of Hurricane Fiona

Tropical cyclone Fiona hit Atlantic Canada last weekend, affecting Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island and causing widespread power outages and substantial damages. In addition to casualties, the hurricane washed away and demolished many homes and buildings.

Fairchild Media Group stands with all the victims impacted by Hurricane Fiona. Together we are urging everyone to lend a helping hand by donating to the Canadian Red Cross’s “Hurricane Fiona in Canada Appeal” program. The Federal Government of Canada also announced on September 25 that all donations to the Canadian Red Cross will be matched in the next 30 days. The matching period could be extended depending on the intensity of the disaster. All proceeds raised will support the range of emergency services the Red Cross is delivering to those in need including interim housing, clothing, food, and other essential supplies. For more information and donations, please visit the Canadian Red Cross webpage.

“Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant” Qipao Exhibition
The Marriage of Tradition with Fashion

08/15/2022

Entering its 28th year, the Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant cheongsam (Qipao) segment has always been the highlight at the Final, very often leaving a lasting impression on the audience. An exquisite cheongsam is able to accentuate the beautiful figure of the oriental women, while showcasing the distinctive traditional and modern custom-designs embroidered on every Qipao. This year’s Pageant was kick-started by the “Miss Chinese Vancouver Qipao Exhibition” held at Aberdeen Centre. A series of outstanding cheongsams previously worn by Pageant Champions, including Tracey Wong(1995), Gloria Tang(2012), Jennifer Coosemans(2015), Alice Lin(2018), Jennifer Packet(2019), and Cindy Wu(2021) traced the evolution from the inaugural Pageant to the present, reflecting a perfect marriage of tradition with fashion. At the same time, the crown, scepter, and coronation cape awarded to the Champion were displayed, exhibiting the most iconic and symbolic elements of the beauty pageant. The TV screen playing throughout the exhibition also relived many classic moments of the past Pageants. In order to provide more information to interested applicants, last year’s winners along with instructors shared some tips and secrets on participating at the competition and personally answered enquiries on the spot.

Miss Chinese Vancouver Cindy Wu creates the artwork “Coexistence” for LunarFest

02/02/2022

This year, the LunarFest welcomes the Year of the Tiger with the theme of “Together, Strong.” It uses art to convey the concept of togetherness and strength as humans learn to coexist with mother nature.

A graduate from the Parsons School of Design and Royal College of Art, Miss Chinese Vancouver 2021 Cindy Wu was inspired by the festival’s theme and turned abstract brushstrokes into a symbolic art piece called “Coexistence” to signify unity as we hold hands with Mother Earth for a green future.

Yasmine Ross, the 1st runner-up of the Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant 2021, is also an artist involved in acting and filmmaking. She is fluent in English, French, and Mandarin and strives to promote harmony among people from different cultures to make the world a less lonely place. Yasmine delivers a greeting in Canada’s official languages and Chinese to wish everyone a healthy and prosperous Lunar New Year.

From now on until February 21st, visit https://lunarfestvancouver.ca/mcvs-messages to appreciate Cindy’s artwork and Yasmine’s celebration video as they fully manifest the power of multiculturalism in Vancouver.
