Jiang Xue-ning (Bai Lu) went to great lengths to become the Empress. But she was forced to take her own life in the palace. Fast forward to the present, and Jiang Xue-ning’s wish is to stay away from power struggles and control her destiny. However, she still somehow enters the palace as a study partner and becomes Master Xie Wei’s (Zhang Linghe) pupil. While learning from Xie Wei, Jiang Xue-ning plots to prevent Yan Lin (Zhou Junwei) from getting involved in the “coming-of-age” incident. By following Jiang Xue-ning and Xie Wei’s strategy, the Yans manage to stay alive.

After the coming-of-age crisis, Jiang Xue-ning unwittingly gets embroiled in the imperial court crackdown on Lord Pingnan rebels’ scheme. She and Zhang Zhe (Wang Xingyue) venture into enemy territory. At the critical moment, Jiang Xue-ning uses her body to shield arrows for Zhang Zhe. But the duo eventually cannot stay together. Hostile the State of Yue launches an invasion. First Princess Shen Zhi-yi (Liu Xening) does not hesitate to go down the road to making peace by marriage. To save her buddy Shen Zhi-yi, Jiang Xue-ning goes with Xie Wei to the north to deal with the State of Yue. While overcoming difficulties, Xie Wei does not mind getting hurt as he protects Jiang Xue-ning. The duo gradually have affectionate feelings for each other. However, an even more evil conspiracy gradually surfaces, and it astonishingly points to the truth about the Lord Pingnan incident from twenty years ago. Jiang Xue-ning and Xie Wei eventually team up to uncover the truth from yesteryear. Jiang Xue-ning also uses love to influence Xie Wei. The couple eventually find happiness.
